With an average temperature of 70 degrees, San Diego offers plenty of free solar energy for the taking.
In fact, the city makes it easy to install renewable energy, providing a whole host of rebates to cut your costs. And our top San Diego solar contractors can help you get the most out of those incentives.
I’ll break down the major ones below, but believe me, this is only the beginning.
To learn how much it costs to go solar in your area, click here.
The largest incentive comes from the federal government, which offers a 30% tax credit for home solar installations. This credit isn’t capped, so you really can subtract 30% from your total costs.
Next, the California Solar Initiative (CSI) offers rebates from the state. The sooner you go solar, the higher your rebates will be. Currently, San Diego Gas & Electric offers a rebate of $0.65 per watt. So, if solar sells for about $6 per watt, you’re saving roughly 11% with the state rebate.
That, plus the federal credit, brings your total costs down to 59% of the asking price. But if you’re interested in going solar, it’s best to get your solar estimates soon, as this rebate will decrease again once capacity is reached. See the Trigger Point Tracker for rebate updates.
San Diego Gas & Electric also offers rebates under California’s SASH program. Rebates range from $4.75 to $7 per watt, and go to households that earn half the area median income. That’s a free solar PV system.
Households that earn 50-80% of the median income can also qualify for a partially subsidized system. To learn if you qualify, call GRID Alternatives at (866) 921-4696 to walk you through the process. You can then let CalFinder Solar match you with a licensed San Diego installer by clicking here.
Solar panels installed by December 31, 2016 may qualify for 100% property tax exclusion.
Qualifying solar power systems include:
Solar pool and hot tub heating systems are not included. Your exemption can be claimed for the fiscal year you install. Call your county assessor’s office to see if your solar energy system qualifies.
Rebates up to $1,875 are also available for solar hot water heater installations. Under AB 1410 of 2007, $350 million was set aside for water heaters that displace traditional gas-powered and electric models.
If you installed a solar water heater after July 15, 2009, you may be eligible to claim your rebate retroactively. Applications are still being accepted for solar heaters installed now, as well. See the CSI Thermal Program for more information.
